Garnet Rogers CD Release
Concert
Opening: Kym Tuvim
Garnet Rogers has established himself as
"One of the major talents of our time". Hailed by the
Boston Globe as a "charismatic performer and
singer", Garnet is a man with a powerful physical presence
- close to six and a half feet tall - with a voice to
match. With his "smooth, dark baritone" (Washington
Post) his incredible range, and thoughtful, dramatic
phrasing, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics
alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music,
like the man himself, is literate, passionate, highly
sensitive, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail, his
songs "give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the
heart" (Kitchener Waterloo Record). As memorable
as his songs, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick
wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back
again.

Cliff Eberhardt
Opening: Ellis
Long one of the most respected songwriters on the club
scene, his peers often mine his catalog for themselves.
Cliff’s song “Memphis” was
included on Cry Cry Cry, an album of collaborative covers
by the “folk super-group” of the same name. Other
performers who have recorded his songs include Richie
Havens, Shawn Colvin, Russ Taff and Buffy Sainte Marie. He
cut his teeth listening to the likes of James Taylor, Joni
Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Howlin’, Bonnie Raitt, and
Mississippi John Hurt — receiving an early and impressive
tutorial in acoustic music. At the same time, he was also
listening to great pop songwriters like Cole Porter, the
Gershwins, and Rodgers and Hart, which explain his penchant
for great melodies and clever lyrical twists. Cliff
continues to be one of the artists who have become “Stone
Soup favorities.” Join us to see (and hear)
why!!!

Brazz Tree
From two seemingly opposite ends of the world come two
American musicians with one global musical vision. What
starts out a simple ideal–to combine all of the music that
one loves without adhering to stylistic guidelines or
parameters–becomes increasingly difficult in a world where
"music" is not music unless easily categorized, classified
and/or compartmentalized. Brazz Tree is a
band (Mazz Swift on violin and vox; and
Brad Hammonds on acoustic guitars) that
combines all of the aforementioned elements in a sometimes
cacophonous, sometimes very straightforward, always
elegant, but also sometimes swooping around and hitting you
in the back of the head sort of way. They make music that
people want to hear on the radio. For something new, and
completely different, come down to see this absolutely
mesmerizing new duo that has been playing and pleasing
audiences all around New England!

DOUBLE BILL: The Laws and Les Sampou
John and Michele Law are not only husband
and wife but are also partners in music, performing as The
Laws and getting ready to make a strong move for greater
recognition in the Americana ranks in this country behind a
typically ambitious touring schedule (200-plus nights a
year on the road) and a stirring new album for their own
label, JML Music, titled Ride It Out. Les
Sampou has easy command of a full-range of
American music styles and it's easy to see why. Her
influences range from old timey music by such artists as
Elizabeth Cotton and Jimmie Rodgers, to sixties folk music
from Joan Baez and Pete Seeger; R&B and Motown tunes by
the likes of Percy Sledge, Sam Cooke and Wilson Pickett,
and a wide variety of country blues covers. Joining Les
will be Paul Kochanski
on bass and
Kevin
Barry on Guitar
This promises to be a night of incredible music, and maybe
a few surprises, too—so, don’t miss it!

Alice Peacock
Opening: Emily Nyman
Lived-in. That's how Alice Peacock's new
album feels. "When we were recording the strings, one of
the musicians said to me, 'This record feels like an old
shirt - familiar and comfortable.'" That’s also how Alice's
voice and warm personality connects with the audience, and
her live performances offer the nuances that often times
are lost on recordings. You feel like you’ve known her
forever! She has returned to her roots, performing in
coffeehouses and the intimate club scene, after a taste of
the fast life in the corporate music industry. She
continues to use her talents and energy to support
education and reading initiatives for children that have
taken her from the streets of Chicago to the Senate
Judiciary Committee in Washington, D.C. She should feel
right at home at Stone Soup!

DOUBLE BILL: David Jacobs-Strain and Marjorie Thompson
David Jacobs-Strain emerged from the rain
soaked mountains of Western Oregon storming the festival
circuit as a dynamic blues prodigy. Like a diesel
powerhouse of raw energy, David speeds across the landscape
of the Country Blues to the earthbound grooves of the
Mississippi Delta, with his driving slide guitar and
fervent vocals. His passion stretches the limits of the
blues with blazing guitar breakdowns that verge on
psychedelia and highlight his intimate knowledge of the
fretboard. Marjorie Thompson has worked
hard and excelled at three careers, any one of which would
cause many to bow under the pressure. What she has in
common with the fingerstyle guitarists and songwriters and
singers of the blues, country blues, and folk traditions is
that she has lived life fully and made pointed and poignant
observations about it. She has recorded four studio albums
of her songs with a proper producer and engineer, and her
career as a country blues artist has continued to grow.
Recently, she has served as Jorma Kaukonen's teaching
assistant at Fur Peace Ranch.

Mary Ann Rossoni
Opening: Ian Fitzgerald
On her third album, Timber & Nails,
singer-songwriter, painter, and all-around Renaissance
woman Mary Ann Rossoni has finally managed
to get the point across. “I finally feel like I had
something real to say,” says Rossoni, “and I didn’t have
any hang-ups about it.” Over the course of her three solo
projects, benefit tracks, and more when her acclaimed
albums duet recordings are factored in, Mary Ann has
explored meaningful and personal issues, but never has she
been as eloquent or as passionate about them as she has on
her new album. Perhaps its because in the five years since
Mary Ann made her last album, she’s lived a little, grown
up a lot, and begun to see the world in a very different
light: her own. Tonight, Mary Anne will be joined by her
band—and we all know what that means! One rockin’ evening
of music!!!
April 26
Vance Gilbert ( $15 in
advance, $18 day of show)
Opening: Teresa Storch
Vance Gilbert burst onto the
singer/songwriter scene in the early 90's when the buzz
started spreading in the folk clubs of Boston about an
ex-multicultural arts teacher and jazz singer who was
knocking 'em dead at open mikes. Today, Vance continues to
wow audiences with his big voice, wonderful lyrics, comedic
stand-up stories, and audience rapport which is unmatched
by any other artist out there. He is probably one of the
most familiar, requested and just all around favorites of
the folk community. Attending one of his performance can be
compared to an aerobics class; he will get your blood
pumping, your muscles working and have you leaving the
concert exhilarated, refreshed and renewed! Join us for an
evening of a healthy dose of laughter, music and positive
energy!

May 10
Geoff Muldaur
Opening: The Killdevils
Geoff Muldaur is one of the great voices
and musical forces to emerge from the folk, blues and
folk-rock scenes centered in Cambridge, MA and Woodstock,
NY. During the 1960's and '70's, Geoff made a series of
highly influential recordings as a founding member of the
Jim Kweskin Jug Band and the Paul Butterfield's Better Days
group, as well as collaborations with then-wife Maria and
other notables (Bonnie Raitt, Eric Von Schmidt, Jerry
Garcia, etc.). Although he is known as a musician’s
musician, it is clearly his voice that most identifies him.
The London Times wrote, "Immaculate guitar picking was
matched by vocals that were rich, and bore out the
guitarist, Richard Thompson's praise for him: 'There are
only three white blues singers, and Geoff Muldaur is at
least two of them.'"
