Nerissa and Katryna Nields
have been the darlings of the coffeehouse/festival scene since 1991, with tunes ranging from off-the-hook idiosyncratic to kicking to heartbreaking. Their first musical influences came from vacations at a family camp in the Adirondacks. They have been a part of Lillith Fair, and have shared the stage with Natalie Merchant, Suzanne Vega, Sarah McLaughlin, Dar Williams, The Indigo Girls, James Taylor, Joan Baez, the Band, 10,000 Maniacs, Billy Bragg, Dan Zanes and countless others, all of whom informed and enhanced their musical repertoire.

Describing their most recent songs, Nerissa has stated, "Having children has brought us back to our roots in a powerful way. I'm much more drawn to the honesty of folk music, the simplicity of it.” Katryna added, “... I love how, when we sing these 'Nerissa' songs in concerts, everybody sings along, even though it’s the first time they've heard them. They're songs that really invite the listener into the music making process.”

Sister Holler( 2007) demonstrated that it is possible to return to tradition while growing musically into new sounds. They have recently released a book, with accompanying CD, All Together Singing in the Kitchen, which was written to teach even nonmusical people how to add music to their children’s everyday lives by learning singing games, keeping a beat, learning choruses, dancing, making homemade instruments, and more. They are currently working on a new CD, “The Full Catastrophe” which is about parenthood, marriage and the challenges of staying present to the gifts of these most precious relationships, the challenge of losing oneself in one's beloveds.

Listeners of the Nield Sisters are invited and engaged, with the lyrics and the harmonies, with the familiar and the twists of the familiar. On February 4, Stone Soup may be turned into an Adirondack summer camp campfire sing, and we will all be reminded of who we’ve always been.
